In 1918, George Weiler started a real estate and insurance agency. When George Weiler, died, his son, John Weiler, took over. John Weiler left to join Prudential Life Insurance. Francis May, George’s son-in law, bought the agency from his estate. May changed the name of the agency to May’s Insurance Agency. The agency grew; and, in 1951, Francis May’s son, Jim, was brought into the agency. Jim Weis, who is married to Jim May’s wife’s sister, was brought into the agency in 1960. Tragically, Jim May died in 1966 of a brain aneurysm. Needing help to run the agency, Jim Weis brought Bob Thompson, an Aetna field man, into the agency in 1967. Francis May retired in 1968.

The agency continued to grow under the direction of Weis and Thompson, and in 1972 Bill Weidert was brought into the agency. That year the agency moved to new and larger quarters in the old Bank of Burlington building at 500 N. Pine Street. The agency continued to grow and in 1978, Jim Peterson joined the agency. Thompson left the agency in 1983 to pursue other business interests. Weidert sold his interest in the agency in 1990, and currently retains some of his accounts. Joel Weis, Jim’s son was brought into the agency in 1992. At the present time, both Jim Weis and Bill Weidert remain active in the agency.

It is noteworthy that May’s was cited as the longest continuously appointed agency of the Aetna Property and Casualty Company in the five surrounding states. May’s represented Aetna until Aetna went out of the property and casualty business. Northwestern Mutual Life has also been continuously represented by one of May’s agents since George Weiler started the agency.

Today, we continue to represent some of America’s finest insurance companies. May’s Insurance Agency is pleased to have served the Burlington area for these many years and is grateful to all of its loyal customers, past and present. We serve generations of families.
